Course Description

By taking this course, occupational therapy practitioners will be able to analyze national K-3rd grade academic standards and complete a crosswalk with required sensorimotor abilities for students to meet these demands. Furthermore, OT's will leave this course being able to assess and provide interventions embedded within the MTSS format to support student success through addressing foundation sensory perceptual and motor skills whether it be for a classroom, group or individual need.

Learning Objectives

1. Learners will be able to identify national academic standards for K–3rd grade and foundational sensory functions to support those standards.

2. Learners will be able to analyze and apply the connection between sensory and motor skills to support academic success in K–3rd grade students.

3. Learners will utilize assessment results to develop intervention strategies embedded in an MTSS framework.

Dr. Baltazar Mori is the founder of playSense, a pediatric occupational therapy clinic in Redondo Beach, CA, and ASImentoring.com, an online Sensory Integration mentoring program. She earned her Doctorate and Master’s in Occupational Therapy from the University of Southern California in 2000. A national and international lecturer, she focuses on sensory integration and social participation. Dr. Baltazar Mori is an instructor with CLASI and has also taught advanced autism practice courses at Thomas Jefferson University. She is an active researcher and contributing author in the field of sensory integration and occupational therapy. Her leadership includes serving as chairperson of the Sensory Integration Special Interest Section for AOTA. She co-authored Every Child Wants to Play and contributed to Frames of Reference for Pediatric Occupational Therapy.

Jennifer Petersen OTD, OTR/L

Jennifer Petersen OTD, OTR/L

Dr. Jennifer Petersen is a professor and assistant director in the Department of Occupational Therapy at St. Ambrose University, where she teaches assessment, intervention, and research methods, and mentors doctoral students. Her research focuses on the Evaluation in Ayres Sensory Integration (EASI), leading several student projects in this area. Dr. Petersen has published multiple scientific articles, including Petersen et al. (in press), Mailloux et al. (2021), Petersen et al. (2020), Petersen (2017), and Frolek Clark et al. (2011). She earned her Master’s in Occupational Therapy from St. Ambrose University and her Doctorate from Thomas Jefferson University, as well as advanced practice certificates in ASI, autism, and neuro-developmental treatment. Her clinical background includes work in outpatient pediatric clinics and consulting for schools and daycares. Dr. Petersen is committed to advancing best practices in evaluation and intervention to support child and family-centered goals.

This is an intermediate level course intended for occupational therapy practitioners working in school systems or with a goal to better understand supporting autistic students in school systems

Course Completion Requirements

To receive a certificate for this course, you must watch the recorded course in its entirety. Then, you will need to take a learning assessment test and earn a score 75% or higher. If you pass, a certificate will be automatically generated and sent to your email.
