Course Description

This course describes concepts and strategies from the Size Matters Handwriting Program, a proven curriculum-based approach to teaching handwriting. Proficient writing skills are fundamental for every student, constituting a vital life skill. Writing offers enduring advantages to children, allowing them to showcase their understanding in academic settings, equipping them for prosperous careers ahead, and granting them the ability to articulate their thoughts, emotions, perspectives, and concepts with confidence. Fun ideas will be presented for many subjects to promote peer mentorship, self-monitoring, and self-advocacy, as well as functional, legible printing across the curriculum.

Learning Objectives

1. Identify at least two handwriting strategies that could be embedded in all content areas across the curriculum.

2. Identify at least two handwriting strategies you can use to increase student buy-in and teacher retention in the classroom.

A pediatric Occupational Therapist for 48+ years. With a BS in OT from the University of Pennsylvania and an MS and DOT from Temple University, Bev worked in a variety of treatment settings ranging from residential facilities to private homes, clinics to schools, and habilitation centers to sheltered workshops.

A creative entrepreneur, determined researcher, and tireless professional, Dr. Bev is also the author of The Size Matters ® Handwriting Program, a concept-driven approach to teaching and remediating handwriting. SMHP has been proven effective at a .001 level of significance in the largest research study ever done on handwriting. Currently used in every state and 5 continents, SMHP is quickly being recognized as the fastest way to promote legibility.

In 2010, Dr. Bev launched Real OT Solutions ® . Its mission, as both a product and education-oriented business, is to provide consumers – therapists, teachers, parents, and kids, with Effective, Efficient, Affordable, and Fun solutions to school needs. Its catalog of materials, including the Size Matters ® Handwriting Program, enables children, teachers, parents, and occupational therapists to work together more successfully.

In 2015, she was recognized for her professional contributions and inducted as a Fellow into the American Occupational Therapy Association. She is also an approved provider of continuing education through the American Occupational Therapy Association.

A combination of speaker presentation with a slide deck and both synchronous & asynchronous Q+A with the presenter.

This is an introductory level course intended for occupational therapy practitioners working in school systems or with a goal to better understand occupational therapy in school systems

Course Completion Requirements

To receive a certificate for this course, you must watch the recorded course in its entirety. Then, you will need to take a learning assessment test and earn a score 75% or higher. If you pass, a certificate will be automatically generated and sent to your email.
